Deck Construction Tips For An Easy Project
Sometimes nothing else will do except to build a beautiful deck. Not that here is anything wrong with sitting on the lawn on your garden furniture and watching the clouds drift by on a summer day. But it’s really kind of nice to be able to have that nice solid feeling of a deck under your chair or chaise lounge. And you sure wouldn't want to be spilling your drink from a side table that wasn't level would you.
So here’s a few great deck construction tips to get you started in the right direction.
So here are a few top tips that it's important to pay attention to before you start building your deck. You can get by without these, if you really want to, but it's worth checking through to make sure you haven't missed something really important.
1. Make sure you have your permits in order. Nothing, and I do mean nothing feels worse than to start on putting up a stunning new deck in your backyard then to find out it is 2 inches too tall and you have to retrofit for a set of steps or a railing. Or realizing after planning and buying your materials that they are not really allowed in your location. Check, check, check, to be sure you can use the materials you want and to ensure that your design and plan are in keeping with your local codes.
2. Don't skimp on the fasteners you use to keep your deck together. How awful would it look to have a brown rust stain creeping along the floor of your deck you just spent weeks putting together and then you realize the stain is coming from the cheapo screws you picked up at the local big box home improvement store. Invest in something decent like stainless steel fasteners so you won't be listening to your family or your buddies wondering out loud where that stain is coming from.
3. Get the best decking material you can possibly afford. Pressure treated boards are great for decking now. They skip the arsenic treatment that the wood used to get and the small amount you will pay for pressure treated lumber is minimal compared to ripping out your deck in 5 years to replace that one post or joist that is falling apart.
4. Check out some of the manufactured decking materials. They have come a long way in beauty and ruggedness. Some of the most beautiful designs in wood can be found now in manufactured decking like Trex, Timber Tech or Epoch. The new composite decking materials will give you years, and I do mean years, of maintenance free deck enjoyment. Skipping that refinishing every other year is so worth the investment in superior decking material it's hard to even count.
5. Make sure your supports are solid as a rock. Deck railing posts now come in a great variety of styles and materials. They are visually stunning and add greatly to the look of your deck. But, and this is a big but, even though they are very decorative, you need to be absolutely certain that the deck railing posts are posts should be fastened to deck floor joists and blocked in so that they are solid. Be sure that your deck posts are absolutely vertical and rigid for both safety and proper wood deck construction.
