Outdoor patio swings are hands down one of the best ways to relax on your patio. Often people will have a porch swing in front of their home. And these look great when hanging from the ceiling of your front porch.

But out back in the patio area, you might need some other way to install your patio swing other than hanging it from the ceiling with porch swing hooks. Maybe not, but many people do not have roofs over their patios and if you don’t have one of these then you are not going to be able to install an overhead swing.

Of course, you don’t want anyone to be walking behind any swing you have, but once in a while it seems to be a bit easier to forget that a glider swing really does swing. Not a big deal, but you want to make sure you have enough room for it to move.

Lots of folks also like the wicker porch swings that hang from decorative chains from the ceiling. And if you have a patio with a roof over it, a wicker swing makes for a very relaxing atmosphere on your patio. You can almost see the tropical beach in front of you as you sit and drowse on your wicker swing. Cool and comfortable and fairly lightweight, these kinds of patio or porch swings are always a hit.

Some people don’t particularly like the way wicker looks. Myself I prefer most of my patio furniture made from solid wood and in particular I like the way teak looks. But there are plenty of other people in the world and they like porch swings made from other materials.

If you are considering a wooden porch or patio swing, whether handing or glider, you can probably find a style that fits in you in a type of wood that you like.  Some f the more popular woods for patio swings are teak, cedar, cypress, maple, alder, pine, and oak.

Probably the two that hold up the best to the elements are teak and cedar. These have a distinctive look and color to them, so if you are looking for a particular color scheme or prefer your wooden patio furniture stained then you might do well to consider pine, maple or alder or cypress.

And if you don’t care for the way wood looks outside on your patio, then there are plenty of patio swings made from wrought iron and even PVC.
